I teamed with Beauty Lab Executive Director Birnur Aral, Ph.D., to test out the new Dyson Airwrap both at home and in the GH Beauty Lab — and what we found might surprise you. The Dyson Airwrap styler and Dyson Supersonic hair dryer are two of the most popular hair tools on the market, and deciding between them can be challenging. This 6-in-1 hot air brush can deliver tight curls or loose waves, all while drying and smoothing hair. Our writer who reviewed this loved "the cool shot button and volume booster switch, the latter of which helps create extra-tousled and textured tresses." This is the lowest price we've ever seen it. Since the Dyson Airwrap 2.0 debuted in June 2022, the brand's loyal customers shopped with such fervor that "out of stock" became synonymous with its name. Its success came off the heels of the highly-reviewed first generation Dyson Airwrap.

However, make sure you purchase a refurbished model from well-known retailers - Dyson itself offers reconditioned units, while in the US, they can also be found at retailers such as NordstromRack. Avoid marketplace sites as there are no guarantees on the condition of the hair styler. Now that I have the hang of it, my curls look pretty good all day (see my photo here taken 10 hours later. The curls aren't perfect, but they aren't flat either). But how well your style holds will vary drastically depending on the products you use. “If you hair is having a difficult time with style retention, stay away from creams, oils, or anything that’s a softening agent because those will compromise your style,” Reyman says.

I also love that the heat is so much gentler which means less damage to my hair over time. If you're not planning on curling your hair with the barrels, use any of the brushes or the blow-dryer attachments to dry it completely. But if you do want to use the barrels, blow-dry your hair only until it's 70 percent dry. Hair that's too wet will take too long to style, and hair that's too dry won't style at all. That sweet spot for me is when my hair looks mostly dry but still feels a lil steamy and humid. With the right sectioning technique, styling products, and attachments, I was able to eventually figure it out.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article, Dyson’s engineers designed the attachments of the Airwrap and Supersonic to use the Coanda effect, which is a phenomena of physics that occurs when air deviates from its path and curves. The Airwrap is also a more compact device than the Supersonic, because the styling attachments are the real stars of the show. She also said that she finds hair — in any style — powerful and an important part of self-expression, especially for Black people, whose hair has been the subject of legislation, scrutiny and celebration.

Though the Airwrap Complete comes with attachments, Dyson sells attachments separately too. If, for any reason, you need to use a new attachment with an older Airwrap base model—or an older attachment with the newer Airwrap Complete—you’ll be able to mix and match without a problem. You can easily replace attachments by buying them individually online, or test the upgraded attachments with your older device if you already have one at home. The wide tooth comb attachment ($40) is also available for separate purchase if you didn’t buy the curly/coily set, which includes it in place of the soft smoothing brush. And it's not all about packaging and presentation (although I do love that leather case). The technology and all the attachment options make it a single replacement for your blow-dryer, hair-dryer brushes, and curling wands, and I have yet to see an all-in-one hair tool that completely compares to the Dyson Airwrap.
